A special weather advisory has been issued for southwest Saskatchewan as winter conditions approach.

Environment Canada issued the statement earlier this afternoon, warning of what they call a "major early-season winter storm."

The system bringing in the weather is coming from Alberta and Montana. It is expected to hit the area tomorrow afternoon and last until Sunday.

The statement has been issued for the Swift Current, Shaunavon, Assiniboia, and Leader area.

Around 10-20 centimetres of snow is expected to fall in the southwest, with Cypress Hills set to be powdered with 30 centimetres.

They advise that travel will become difficult on tomorrow night and Sunday.

Winds will also be pushing the snow around as a stiff north-easterly breeze picks up.

Natalie Hasell, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, said to keep a watchful eye on the skies and forecasts.

"If you are travelling this weekend, if it's not absolutely necessary, it might be worth rescheduling that."

Roads subject to snow may also accumulate ice due to temperatures flipping between the positives and negatives.

Checking the Highway Hotline can be helpful to asses the risk of travel.

She said that the special weather statement would likely be upgraded to a winter storm watch or snow warning.
