A preliminary initial review of the Trans Canada Highway has been conducted by the Highways Ministry, with officials looking at adding more lights and a speed study in the coming weeks.

Among the findings of the review, the last decade has 7 fatal collisions on the stretch of highway, with 5 including pedestrians.

In late November, a 27 year old Swift Current man was killed when his car and a tractor trailer unit collided 1.6 kilometers west of Swift Current.

The following month, an 84 year old man was killed when he was struck by a truck in his attempt to cross the highway.

Doug Wakabayashi with the Ministry of Highways acknowledges the recent spike in accidents on the highway.

"The two fatalities close together is rather alarming for not just the people of Swift Current but for the Ministry as well but we do these reviews.. it is not just a question of how many fatal collisions occur, we do these everytime."

Wakabayashi says a speed study is upcoming for the highway and says the ministry also conducted a review of the Esso Truck Town intersection.

A more formal audit is on the way for that location.
