The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed another race from the Swift Current Stock Car Association, however, they're hopeful for a green flag early next month.

The season opener for the racing association was scheduled for this past Saturday afternoon but that's now been moved to June 11 and 12 if all goes as planned.

Alicia Smith, the secretary for the Swift Current Stock Car Association's board of directors, said they felt postponing the May 15 race was a more logical decision.

"Just due to some of the COVID-19 regulations and the fact that there is variants of concern in Saskatchewan, we didn't want to have anyone unsafe," she said. "We didn't want to have to tell any competitors from out of province that they shouldn't come, it just seemed better to postpone."

Some of the Saskatchewan Health Authority regulations for the May 15 race would have included only 30 fans allowed in attendance but unlimited drivers could partake.

"The guys that were potentially racing said that that doesn't even sound like fun, to race for nobody," she said. "Obviously they race for fun because they enjoy it but they also like to see the stands full of fans.

"Hopefully June, as long as this re-opening plan goes as planned that the premier has moving forward, we'll be able to have 150 in the stands again."

The lineup for both the Friday and Saturday races is expected to feature minis, streets, and mods, with the possibility of hobby cars too.

And Saturday's race will be concluded by a 50-lap enduro race with a chance for someone from the public to join in as well.

"We have a car, if you check on our Facebook page, we have a car up for raffle that somebody can race," she said. "As long as the race is a go we'll have the event and somebody will get to race that car."
