Five lucky elementary students got the opportunity to be fire chief for a day at the Swift Current Fire Department this week.

Fire Chief Denis Pilon says that each of the schools picked their own student to be a Fire Chief.

"We have a contest that we run with the schools, and it is certain grades that are involved and they pick the winner from each of the schools."

Each elementary school was involved in the process including, All Saints, Ecole Centennial, Ashley Park, Central, and Oman school. The students took part in a lot of activities while at the fire hall.

"They learned a little bit about fire prevention and they got to ride in the fire trucks, said Polin.

Pilon says that the Fire Chief for a day Contest is a great opportunity for everybody involved in the day.

"It's a lot of fun for the kids, for our Firefighters and the kids actually learn something while they are here we give the information on fires and how they start and how to prevent them, so it is a learning experience for them."

Polin says, they have been doing this program for longer than he can remember, even before he started in Swift Current.

At the time of the student’s visit the ladder truck was giving them problems adds Polin, so they are hoping to bring back the students at a later date for a 100 foot ride on their ladder truck.
