The Great Plains College SunDogs volleyball teams launched their 10th season at a luncheon in the Swift Current Campus on Tuesday.

The players and coaches of the women's and men's teams were introduced at the event. Coaching the women's team for a second year is Briana Wilms with a new assistant coach, Michael Ruus, who played volleyball at the CIS level for Dalhousie University before coaching at Kings University College.

"I think we've come a little ways in practice so far, and we've got some more time before our first tournament, so I think we'll be better prepared this year for our first game," Wilms said. "I just expect to get better every practice. I said to the girls, as long as we put our best foot forward every practice and put our full effort in, we're going to get as much as we can out of the season, hopefully a few more wins than we did last year."

On the men's side, an all first-year team will be coached by Tyler Byers and Brandon Schultz, who both won a provincial championship with the SunDogs.

"We've got high hopes," Byers said. "Of course I want to win a Provincial Championship, I've done it as a player and I want to do it as a coach, and that's what we're going to be pushing for. If we don't make it, we don't make it, but it's something that we're going to strive for."

The SunDogs start the volleyball season in the first week of October, and will take on the Millar College of the Bible Edge in the annual Battle of the Southwest on October 21st. Other events planned to celebrate the SunDogs' 10th season include their mascot's birthday party on October 24th, their awards banquet on March 31st and an alumni tournament set for the spring.
