Athletic excellence in Swift Current is set to be celebrated once again ahead of the Swift Current 57s' 2018 season and home opener tonight.

For the second-straight year a 'Night of Champions' celebration will precede the 57s opener. 57s President Mike Mutlow says it's an essential event for the back-to-back WMBL champions to put on.

"I think it's all about community - we're part of the community," said Mike Mutlow. "We've been successful, and all these young individuals and teams have been very successful, so I think it just goes hand-in-hand. It's a pat on the back for them, and a show of respect of how well they've done in their sport too."

A list of accomplishments to be celebrated have yet to be released, although a sample of notable achievements from the past year include the Broncos WHL Championship, SCCHS Sr Colts volleyball's provincial title, and SCCHS wrestler Aleah Nickel's national title.

With excitement building towards another summer of WMBL action in Swift Current, it's the perfect way to kick off the season, according to Mayor Denis Perrault.

The season-opener pits the 57s against the Weyburn Beavers, who Swift Current eliminated in five games during the second round of the 2017 post-season.

First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. at Mitchell Field.
