The Swift Current Curling Club held their AGM Monday night. One big takeaway from the meeting was the Curling Club's membership voting in favour of reducing the length of the curling season.

In a cost-saving move, the Club will trim back the length from six months to five months after it was voted on by club membership, although the amount of ice time is expected to stay the same.

"We're going to have basically five-sixths rent savings, one month fewer labour costs - we expect that our revenue will stay the same," said Ron Eichel, President of the Swift Current Curling Club. "What we'll do is we'll keep the fees the same, but we're going to increase the number of times that curlers have the opportunity to curl, so in essence they'll throw the same numbers of rocks they had in the past, it'll just be a little bit more of a condensed season."

The new curling season schedule will start in late October immediately following the CCA Rodeo Finals.

In the meantime, the Curling Club will continue exploring and implementing ways to increase popularity and membership.

"Our focus is definitely on growing the curling club," Eichel said. "Our mission is to promote the sport of curling in Swift Current and the surrounding area, so we are definitely focusing on doing that."

Several 'Learn to Curl' programs will be available for all ages come the 2018-19 curling season.
