Swift Current hosted its 2019 Multiple Sclerosis (MS) walk Sunday afternoon.

The walk is featured during MS Awareness Month with the goal this year of bringing awareness of the 'invisible disease.'

Things kicked off at the Bridgeway Community Church and saw over 50 participants walk the route, raising a total of $18,565.

Cydnee Colenutt, development assistant for the south location in Regina for the MS Society of Canada, said overall, the walk and funds raised were great to see.

"That just means we can allocate that much more to research, that much more to the programs and services,” she explained. “We can keep our options open for different research methods.”

“We always love to see the communities around Saskatchewan thriving and still raising a huge amount of money,"

Colenutt said that for a community like Swift Current, the money would go towards expanding programs and services offered.

"In Regina, we have things like yoga classes," she said. "We have support groups. I know Swift Current has a support group, but they want to work on expanding it. They're working on getting an exercise class and just a few more things that can assist people living with MS in the smaller communities."

Swift Current's walk was just one of 134 MS walks that happened across the country.

Multiple sclerosis can strike anyone at any moment and is currently classified as an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system.

Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the world, with an estimated one in every 385 Canadians living with the disease. That rounds out to an estimated 77,000 Canadians living with the disease.
