Participants in Swift Current's MS Walk in 2015.

The Saskatchewan Blue Cross Walk is MS Society's largest fundraiser in the province to raise money for research and services for people with Multiple Sclerosis.

Today, Swift Current is holding its 5 km walk at Ashley Park Community and the efforts to raise money for the campaign has already begun. Check-in time is 12:00pm and the start time is 1:00pm.

Colleen Hennan is the community engagement coordinator with the MS Society.

"Last year we had a total of 148 walks across Canada, and there were 11 in Saskatchewan. Not only is it our largest fundraisers, aiming to raise funds to support our programs and services as well as fund research to find a cure for MS, it is also meant to be a day of celebration and for the people who live with MS in the community of Swift Current to come together and see how many people are on their side," she said.

Hennan adds they are looking to build off of the success of last year's event.

"We have had a fantastic response from the community of Swift Current. We are always amazed every year at how the community comes together and not only raises some much needed funds but comes out and supports everyone living with MS in the community. Last year we had one of our best years, actually. We are seeing great registration rates so far this year, we are hoping to have everyone back this year that participated last year and maybe even some new fresh faces," she mentioned.

Hennan says Canada and Saskatchewan has one of the highest rates of Multiple Sclerosis in the world, which could be attributed to a genetic or environment component, including the lack of sunshine in the winter.
