You can expect a white Christmas this year, a result of a new weather system in the area.

Sara Hoffman, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said yesterday that around two centimetres would be falling before Christmas Day, but skies will be clear on the holiday itself.

"So we're expecting the snow to begin tonight and begin tomorrow (today), which is Christmas Eve, and then we're expecting sunny (skies) and a high of minus five for Christmas Day, as snow temperatures will be going above zero, we should expect the snow to stick around."

While Christmas Day is expected to be clear, Hoffman said light flurries have a possibility of coming on Boxing Day.

"At this point in time, we think it'll just be a slight chance, with really no accumulation at all, just some light flurries."

On a broader scale, Hoffman said that last week's low-pressure system would soon be replaced by an arctic high coming into the area, returning us to seasonal weather.

"We have an artic high pushing into the province, so that will keep things in the seasonal range and bring temperatures back down, so that's sort of why we're seeing the temperatures come back to what we expect to see in December."
