A pair of twins from Gull Lake made headlines at the SJHL Draft last week.

The Battlefords North Stars selected Sam and Will Kirwan with their two first-round picks. Sam went 7th overall and Will was the 12th overall selection.

"I think it's really nice that we both got to go together and a cool opportunity to play together in a higher league," Will said.

Sam, a forward, led the Swift Current U15 AA Broncos in scoring with 55 points in 33 games, 27 of which were goals. While Will recorded 18 points from the blueline in 30 games.

"I find it easier when he's on the ice because I know where he is going to go," Will said. "We play the same [style of] game because we've played together for so long."

The duo has committed to the Swift Current U18 AAA Legionnaires on a full-time basis for the 2023-24 season. Sam played eight games for them this past season as a call-up and Will played in seven contests.

"I think the SJHL is more physical league than what AAA would be," Sam said. "We're going to try and play more physical in AAA to get us prepared for the SJHL."

"If we get a call for something to maybe play up [with the North Stars] we could go," Will said. "But we will play that by ear."

The two brothers know a few players that are in the North Stars system and are excited for their future in North Battleford when the time comes.

"It's a great opportunity because they have been a really good team in the SJHL for the past couple of years and now we get to be a part of that," Will said.
