Today in History

1894

Ottawa's hockey club refuses to go to Toronto to play in the second annual Stanley Cup game, so the Cup is awarded to the Montreal AAA (Amateur Athletic Association) for the second time. Should have done this during the lock out.

1905

Chicago attorney Paul Harris and three other businessmen meet for lunch to form the Rotary Club, the world's first service club. Swift Current has a Rotary club that puts on many great events including the Lobster Festival.

1916

A legislative committee in Manitoba ordered the province's dentists to stop advertising "painless dentistry." Witnesses complained that their dental experiences were certainly not painless, and the committee agreed that such claims were misleading and possibly even fraudulent.

1942

The first Japanese attack on the U.S. mainland occurs when an I-17 submarine fires 13 shells at an oil refinery near Goleta, Southern California. $500 damage was inflicted. It was not clear why this target was chosen until much later, when it was found that the commander of this particular submarine had visited the site in the 1930's and stumbled into a field of prickly pear cactus. Captain Nishino never forgave the ridicule he received from his American hosts that day.

1945

World War II: During the Battle of Iwo Jima, a group of United States Marines and a U.S. Navy Corpsman, reach the top of Mount Suribachi on the island and are photographed raising the American flag. The photo would later win a Pulitzer Prize and become the model for the national USMC War Memorial.

1970

First presentation of Juno Awards to honour the best Canadian recording artists; the award is named after CRTC Chairman and later CBC/SRC President Pierre Juneau.

1991

Gulf War: Ground troops cross the Saudi Arabian border and enter Iraq.

1998

Osama bin Laden declares jihad against all Jews and "Crusaders"; “Crusaders” of course refers to the people of Europe and the United States…everyone.
