The annual Terry Fox Run is less than a month away, but it may not be a go in Swift Current this year.

As of yesterday, The Terry Fox Foundation didn't have anyone to coordinate the event putting its 35-year history in Swift Current in jeopardy.

Allison Doan, the provincial manager for Manitoba for The Terry Fox Foundation, said that the annual run in support of cancer research and honouring Fox's legacy are starting to disappear in smaller communities.

"The smaller communities are really important to us because Terry believed that everybody should be involved across the country because everyone is touched by cancer," she said. "Especially since last year Swift Current had a huge jump in their fundraising and that makes a huge difference in our research. It would be really difficult to lose this run."

Swift Current has almost raised $135,000 in funds excluding school events for cancer research since the run began being hosted in the city with over $5,300 raised last year.

Doan added to the past coordinator has set up the event really well and the handoff would be pretty seamless.

"It's not a ton of work because so much has been put in place," she said. "We're here to support as much as possible and we never want to see this legacy die in Swift Current."

If a coordinator isn't found for the Swift Current run by Labour Day weekend the event won't be salvageable this year Doan believes.

The event was scheduled to take place on September 16 at Riverside Park.
