A doe was up the creek in Swift Current this morning.

Swift Current firefighters came to the rescue this morning following a report that a female deer had fallen through the ice and into the creek at South Railway East.

Fire Chief Denis Pilon said the RCMP called the department after 9 o'clock and later responded with their water rescue team. Two men quickly donned their water suits and got into the water with the deer.

"And we were able to get her up on the ice, and then with a rope, pull [her] to the side. She was very hypothermic and wasn't able to stand or move, so they moved her up onto the grass and covered her with some blankets," he said. "And after about forty-minutes, when we removed the blankets and uncovered her head, she just ran away."

Chief Pilon said the fire department will rescue animals in dire straights but will not retrieve cats in trees because they eventually come down.  He advises residents to stay off the ice, noting that if a deer can fall through the ice, so can we.
