A 20-day trek raising awareness and funds to fight Huntington's disease has come to an end.

Vanguard School Principal Greg Shwaga completed his 670 kilometres walk across Saskatchewan last Saturday, more than doubling his fundraising goal.

"I would say it was a total success," he told Swift Current Online. "In term of me reaching my goals, I met my fundraising goal and I definitely raised the awareness for the disease and for the Huntington's Society of Canada."

Shwaga's original goal was to raise $10,000 but has well surpassed that mark raising approximately $23,000 with donations still being accepted.

"The website is still there so you can still donate," he added. "The Saskatchewan Teachers Federation also ran the article, but the teachers won't see it until the September edition of the bulletin, so I'm going to ask that it gets left open for that because quite a few teachers will see that come September."

The journey that began west of Macklin at the Alberta border travelled through 23 towns before finishing at the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border on Lake of the Prairies.

"As far as the walk itself, about three days into it I was pretty sore," Shwaga explained. "Somehow I kind of pushed through that wall and then for the rest of the way I was just fighting blisters on my feet."

The southwestern Saskatchewan resident experienced 11 blisters during the expedition while going through 8 pairs of running shoes.

Shwaga attributed his success to numerous family members and friends for helping him along excursion.

"It makes you feel like you're on the right track like you're not doing something that's totally out there or nobody's going to support," he said. "Once I start getting that support I wanted to make sure I finish or give it my best try, so I think the support is huge."
