Premier Brad Wall is upset that drivers are still speeding in a construction area where an 18-year-old woman was struck and killed late last week.

Wall tweeted on Wednesday that he heard from the owner of an asphalt company that police have given out five or six tickets at the site since Ashley Richards died. The New Brunswick native was working as a flag person for a repaving project on Highway 39 at Midale where she was hit by an SUV, and died of her injuries en route to hospital.

Wall says he has asked Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris to look into what can be done to make construction zones safer. Some suggestions being passed around include changing traffic laws and stepping up enforcement in Orange Zones.

Fines for going faster than 60 kilometres per hour when passing highway construction workers start from $140.00 and increase by $2.00 per kilometre over the speed limit, or $4.00/km if the driver was caught going over 90km/h.
