Wayne Cormier will not be attending the World Bench Press Championships in Finland come May.

Cormier said that this is due to an injury he suffered during his seventh national championship win in February.

An MRI revealed that Cormier had suffered a microtear in his posterior deltoid.

Cormier is currently rehabbing and said that he's feeling better day by day.

"I've been using a couple of hundred pounds, and you can feel the pain, but it's not like it was two or three days after the national championship where it was like a knife being pierced into the shoulder, so it is better," he said. "Therapy is working. Lots of therapy, icing, and that sort of thing and as long as it doesn't tear any further, I can't see it being a huge problem."

If all goes well, he said that he plans to back for the Western Canadian powerlifting competition in September and provincials shortly after.

He said that normally he would do everything possible to make it the World Championships but due to his age he doesn't want to push it.

"I would do everything I could to make it Helsinki for the world bench championships, but you know at my age when you get injured it takes longer for you to heal and that's a huge commitment to go when you're injured," he said. "Say I injure it in the warm-up room, and I can't compete that's a huge monetary and time commitment for something that risky."

That isn't the only reason he's not too concerned with missing the World Championships.

"This time around I keep saying it's about having fun," he said. "It's about enjoying the moment, and the journey. I've said it 100 times, I have nothing more to prove in this sport, and that just takes all the pressure off. I'm doing this, this time around for the pure love of the sport and having my family there to watch me and enjoy and share in the moments as they come."

Cormier said that if the shoulder isn't able to heal by the September event, he will call it a career.
