Saskatchewan's first West Nile Virus-positive mosquitoes have been found.

The Ministry of Health says the Culex tarsalis mosquitoes that carry the virus were spotted in the Estevan area.

They add that this species of mosquito is continuing to emerge throughout southern Saskatchewan, and the risk of exposure to West Nile Virus is also expected to rise.

No human cases of the virus have been reported, but the first non-human case for this year has.  A dead crow found near Saskatoon tested positive for the virus.

The public is being urged to take precautions against mosquitoes, especially during this long weekend.
