The Western Canada Summer Games committee presented their medals for the games and also had a sponsor sign on recently.

Earlier this week Mobile Paving Ltd. signed on as the medal sponsor for $25,000. There will be a total of over 1,800 medals given out in 16 different sports, and Mobile Paving will be a part of each medal presentation.

Ron Strieb, one of the owners of Mobile Paving, said that it was no brainer to be a part of the games.

"It's apart of Swift Current, and we've been paving in Swift Current for quite a few years here, and we thought it would be a good way to represent the city."

Scott Cassidy, director of friends of the games, said that they are very excited to see another local business be a part of the games.

"We are very excited to have a major business in our city partner with us and see the values of the games," he said. "Their investment means a ton to our games committee, and we are just very happy that Mobile Paving came on."

Cassidy said with the sponsorship Mobile Paving will be a part of everything to do with the medals.

"They will be a part of every medal ceremony that takes place throughout the games," he said, "There are 16 different sports, over 20 different venues and there will be medal ceremonies every day. For the athletes receiving the medals, that's why they came to Swift Current and Mobile Paving will be connected to every single one of those."

Brandon Wiebe designed the medals and said that he's humbled to think that athletes are going to be competing for medals he designed.

"I thought about the design a lot before I actually put it together," he said. "I wanted to convey a lot of energy and spirit and the coming together of Canadians and diversity that we would see both in athletes and volunteers. That's what I wanted to convey."

"It shows the maple leaf which represents the diversity of Canadians being animated and blown to life by the wind which represents Swift Current's spirit and the volunteer's spirit but also represents the athletes coming together to animate the games. The wind departing from that afterwards is everyone being changed in their own individual way by the games and the experience whether it's volunteerism or actually competing."

Wiebe said that when it came to designing the medals, it wasn't much of a challenge for him.

"I think because I stirred on it for maybe more than a month, but I didn't have time to get to it, so in the back, in the mind, it would just kind of work itself out," he said. "I thought it's the Western Canada Summer Games, lets use the key element of their logo the maple leaf and then let's make that into sort of a celebratory energetic design that when you win if you feel that way and it also encompasses the whole experience by the southwest and everyone else involved."

Wiebe added that the fact there is over 1,800 medals with his design on them, is something he is humbled by.
