A celebration of the southwest’s winter activities is coming to Gull Lake this weekend, as their Whitecap Winterfest returns on Saturday.

The annual tradition was on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is making its comeback one to remember.

Lindsay Alliban is an Economic Development Officer for the community, and is one of the many folks who are working together to organize the day.

“Winterfest is a day for family fun, celebrating Saskatchewan's winter activities,” she said. “We have a bunch of different opportunities to do outdoor activities as well as indoor activities; people can try new things, or do some of our standard things like skating and curling.”

Saturday's events get started at 9 a.m. with a pancake breakfast, and wraps up around 1 a.m. with a cabaret and some live music by Tyler Lewis.

Sponsoring the event and helping make it more affordable for folks to enjoy, is Whitecap Resources. Many local organizations and businesses are also volunteering for the festival.

“We're hoping that it brings out a lot of people from the local community, as well as people from surrounding communities to come and enjoy some of the fun,” Alliban said. “We've made it really affordable, so most activities are free. There are some fees for meals or drinks, and the cabaret for adults has a charge, but kids are free.

“We know that the winter blues are a real thing and we want everyone to be able to have some fun and get together and connect again with the community. It's been a weird few years, and we just want to bring everyone together and celebrate the fun we can have right in our backyard.”
