There was freezing rain this morning, but now the southwest is clear of that it's time for a little bit of snow in the area.

Warning Preparedness Meteorologist with Environment Canada Natalie Hasell said it's a lot colder than usual for this time of year.

The normal high for today in Swift Current is 15 C, but today's is 1 C.

"We have a trough of low pressure in the upper atmosphere that is affecting the general area of the southern prairies, and it is supporting systems that go across the prairies, so we have low-pressure systems, frontal systems, that go all the way from Alberta into Saskatchewan and further east into Manitoba and so on," said Hasell.

Overnight lows for the next week are expected to stay below zero, with highs not going much above the freezing mark in the next couple days.

But by the end of the week, the temperature is supposed to reach 5 C on Friday and 6 C on Saturday before cooling off again.

Hasell said while it's not the start of winter yet, it's a good time for people to prepare their vehicles and residences for the season - before things get significantly colder.

With the poor driving conditions, the Swift Current Rural RCMP also are advising the public that conditions on Highway 1 are icy with snow cover and poor visibility. They're reminding people to have winter clothing and gear in their vehicle with ample fuel and a fully-charged phone.

Police suggest checking road conditions on SaskHighways before heading out.
