Saskatchewan residents will once again receive assistance for emergency flood mitigation measures in 2015 with the launch of the Water Security Agency's Emergency Flood Damage Reduction Program.

The program has been in place on an annual basis since 2011 to provide funding to individuals and communities in the face of imminent flooding, but this year program will assist in preventing damage from flooding to water wells used for human consumption.

"Since 2011, we have invested just under $80 million in mitigation work to protect communities and people's homes," said Scott Moe, the Minister Responsible for the Water Security Agency. "I think it's also important to remember that for every dollar invested in mitigation work such as this program does, that really replaces $20 in replacement to the damage that that water would then occur if it was allowed to run in."

The program reimburses individuals and businesses for 85 per cent of the cost of approved permanent flood protection works in 2015, while communities are eligible for 75 per cent of the cost.

"If the flooding is imminent and you feel it is coming into your home or your building, contact your nearest Water Security Agency office and they will walk you through everything that you need to know about the program and how to keep your home safe and dry," he explained. "There's some criteria for qualifying for it and the first of that criteria is that flooding is imminent and that it is going to enter your home and do damage to your assets, either your personal family assets or your community."

Moe adds the program has newly become a government policy to ensure it will be available for years to come.
