In June of 2015 at Swift Current Provincial Court, a Herbert man pleaded guilty to four charges including manslaughter and sentenced to twelve years in prison.

Zuo Yu Qiu, who goes by the name of Jerry Qiu, was held responsible for the death of 79-year old Henry Gin of Herbert.

"He appeared in the Court of Queen's Bench on Thursday, June 18th at 10am before Justice Keene," said Crown prosecutor, Glen Herman. "He entered guilty pleas to the four counts on the indictment he was facing, namely manslaughter, break and enter to commit robbery, obstruction of justice, and interfering or doing an indignity to human remains."

The Crown and the defense made a joint submission requesting that the twenty-six year old be sentenced for 10 years in prison for the manslaughter charge; 7 years for the break and entry to commit robbery charge. They also asked that these run concurrent. For the obstruction of justice and indignity to a dead human body he received two years for each. However, these will run concurrent to each other and consecutive to the other two charges.

He received credit for time served and will therefore remain incarcerated for 112 months.

"He had initially been charged at the preliminary hearing stage with second degree murder, but again, there was no basis to support a second degree murder," Herman said.

Henry Gin was reported missing by his family in September 2013. Morse RCMP was later contacted by Qiu’s step-mother, telling police that Qiu had confessed to her that he had killed Henry Gin. His body was eventually found 10 kilometres southeast of Morse.

A number of victim impact statements were filed. Two of Gin's nieces read out their statements to court last week.

"Certainly the Town of Herbert lost a leading light. Mr. Gin was a very well-loved member of the community," Herman said.

Following his sentence, Qiu apologized for killing Henry Gin and said that Gin was a good man.
