In one of the feel-good stories of 2013, a young boy was doing what he can to help the local food bank.

Nine-year-old Osten Poh started up the Dairy Department for the Swift Current Salvation Army, which helps the food bank provide dairy products to those in need. The food bank only gave milk and other dairy products to Christmas hamper recipients, but not during other times of the year, and that got Osten's attention.

"They have cereal, but they don't have milk for their cereal?" he said. "So we thought it would be good for me to get the dairy so I can help the people that don't have enough money for milk and margarine and stuff like that."

The program involves buying gift cards from local grocery stores, and then they are brought to the Salvation Army so they buy can milk for the food bank as needed.

Two years ago, he donated $214 of his own money to the Salvation Army's Christmas campaign, and said helping people is very rewarding for him.

The Dairy Department is still going strong into the new year, and Osten's goal is to reach $30,000 in gift card donations within 2 years.
