We're wrapping up the year with a cold snap, but so far we've had it easy compared to last winter.

The first part of 2013 was the back half of a seven-month long winter on the prairies... The snow first hit the ground in October 2012 and it stayed until after Easter. Parts of Saskatchewan also saw record amounts of snowfall through the winter.

By April, we were all wondering when spring was going to arrive, and so was Environment Canada's top weatherman David Phillips.

"We've sent search parties looking for it," he said. "If there's any consolation is that everyone is dealing with the same situation, some more extreme than others, but it doesn't look like a dramatic, rapid warm up."

If there was any consolation, the extended cold helped slow down the thaw and ease the threat of flooding.

The warm weather did arrive much to the relief of many, especially area farmers who brought in a record crop at harvest time despite a late start to seeding.
