About 200 people were on hand for an announcement of a new integrated healthcare facility in Leader

The town of Leader got some positive healthcare news in September when the provincial government announced a $12-million project to expand the Western Senior Citizens Home, and integrate the community's healthcare services, which are currently housed in separate buildings.

About 200 residents packed the Leader Community Hall to hear Health Minister Dustin Duncan make the announcement.

"I think that the turnout is just overwhelming, and I think that it really shows that the community is not only behind the project and the renewal of the physical infrastructure, but they're behind what the region wants to do in delivering the services to the people here," Duncan said.

"This project has been in the making for at least a half-dozen years and the community has been very faithful in supporting it, very aggressive in supporting it, and I'm glad to know that the government has responded with this announcement today," said Wayne Elhard, MLA for Cypress Hills.

Construction of the integrated facility is set to begin in the new year, and it's scheduled to be completed in 2017.
