The Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame opened at the Credit Union iplex in 2012

2012 saw the opening of the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame in Swift Current, and the celebration of its first set of inductees with the first induction banquet in July.

The inaugural class included hockey greats like Gordie Howe, Johnny Bower and Val Marie's own Bryan Trottier, who says it's great to have the Hall of Fame in Swift Current.

"To have it here in Swift Current is a nice little reflection of the city, a nice reflection of all the hockey communities that surround the city, and everyone can hold their head high," Trottier said at the banquet.

A number of teams were also inducted, including the 1989 Memorial Cup Champion Swift Current Broncos. Sheldon Kennedy was part of that team and says it's a huge honour to be part of the first induction class.

"It goes back to your roots," he said. "When you're a teenage kid, it shapes your life in a lot of ways, and it's the times you remember."

The Hockey Hall of Fame is located in the upper level of the Credit Union iplex.
