As hockey season starts, the cleats are hitting the field for the Swift Current Comp High School Colts as well.

Numbers are up for the Colts this year and they could end up being a young, exciting club.

Home Hardware's Overtime August 19th"We've got some holes to fill but we had a fantastic week in June for spring camp," said Head Coach Derek Murdoch. "We're pushing 50 and knew there were some guys that weren't there. We could be looking at 20 grade 10s this year, a sizable group of grade 11s and we're a little thinner at grade 12 but we think we may have a line on a few guys."

In addition to having good numbers, the Colts have the makings of an aggressive team willing to pay the price.

"We had a lot of our younger guys that were flying around the football and not afraid to stick their nose into the pile," Murdoch said. "That's really exciting. It's not to say that we haven't had that, but with this young group of guys you can't coach that aggression. You can teach fundamentals and techniques until we're blue in the face, but if a guy's not really willing to go and get whacked it makes it tough."

Every football team lives and dies with their quarterback. The Cotls are confident they've got a good one.

"One of our grade 12s Grady Lamontange," Murdoch said. "He's a fantastic athlete, he's a good football player and probably one of the strongest leaders we've had since I've been to the comp. He's a guy who asked me for a list of cell numbers so he could get the guys together."

"He can run with the ball, he can throw the ball really well and he's put a lot of work into improving his foot work and his arm strength. When things are going crazy around you he can keep it together."

The Colts handed out equipment Thursday and practice for the first time at 3:45pm Friday.
