Swift Current Colts football is just around the corner, with training camp underway on Monday.

After going 7-2 last year, their first winning season since 1999, Colts Head Coach Derek Murdoch says the approach ahead of training camp is no different than before last season.

"The big message once we get started on Monday is this is 2017, and this is a new year and we've got lots to work on and get ready to go for the first game - it's the same message as last year," he said. "It's one game at a time, it's nice to get to one win, now we go for two, and so on."

Swift Current graduated 19 players this past year and Murdoch says a large group of Grade 11's are excited to step into that leadership role this season and help the younger players get their footing in the speed of high school football.

However, the mentorship aspect may not be as pressing of a matter as getting the offense and defense in rhythm to start the season, as Grade 10's coming out of the PSI Contracting/Len's Plumbing and Heating Bantam Steelers football team have won the Moose Jaw Minor Football League title two years in a row.

"We're getting guys who are good football players, who have been through a few battles now in the last couple of years," he said. "So we're getting guys who are excited to come and play, and we know that they can play. We're hoping that they'll fit into our system really quickly."

Colts training camp runs afternoons this week. They start their 2017 regular season on September 9th with a trip to Weyburn, before playing their first home game under the lights on Thursday, September 14th.
