A Sunday afternoon win for the Home Hardware Midget AAA Legionnaires might have been their finest of the season to date.

The Legionnaires piled a half dozen pucks in the Saskatoon Blazers' cage at Fairview West to earn a 6-2 win.

Despite the one-sided score, the Blazers brought a heavy dose of offense right from the get go, as is expected from a team perched near the top of the SMAAAHL standings.

The Blazers controlled possession and the shot clock handily in the first period, out-shooting the Legionnaires 20-10. But, Swift Current weathered the storm, and managed a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes, thanks in large part to goalie Justin Dueck.

"I thought they really had us on our heels in the first," said head coach Darren Evjen. "The difference was Duey - he made some great saves for us, and just held us in there to give us an opportunity to get our feet underneath us and get going."

Defenceman Ashton Fishley and forward Rhett Evjen scored for Swift Current.

The second period was as good as they come for the Legionnaires this season.

"I thought in the second, we started to play the way to our identity - we put some pucks in, and we just kept going from there," said Evjen.

Swift Current flipped possession time in their favour, utilizing a tenacious forecheck that left the Blazers back-pedaling and scrambling throughout the second period.

Out-shooting the Blazers 11-10 in the frame, the Legionnaires added another two goals to take a comfortable 4-1 lead.

"You've got to be hard-nosed against this team, they pressure everywhere," said Evjen on the message to his team ahead of the prolific second period. "It's a chip game, and if we win our chips, we'll create - that's what we did."

"We created a lot of good out-numbered situations and breakaways through good, hard plays on the wall. There isn't any way to do it besides sticking your nose in there and getting it done. That's what our guys did. That probably was the biggest turning point in the second," he added.

Captain Riley Dekowny scored on a penalty-shot, while defenceman Hunter Larocque wired home a shot on the powerplay in the period.

"In the third, I thought we just played a good defensive game - we stuck to it," said Evjen. "We probably took some penalties because of our hard-nose (play), but you usually kill those when you're playing the right way."

One of those penalties, 13 seconds into the final frame, gave the Blazers a 5-on-3 for 1:47 - but there was no real threat on Dueck and the Legionnaires' lead.

Maguire Scheidt scored twice in the third to make it a five-goal lead, before the Blazers added a late power-play tally to round out scoring in the game.

After the Blazers fired 26 shots on Dueck, the rookie from Waldeck finished the game with a stellar 54 saves on 56 total shots - his best outing of the campaign.

"I just tried to see every puck as best as I could, and just get the best angle I could, and just give my team the best chance to win," Dueck said, adding that the team win was a big one for their rhythm moving forward.

"That's huge, it just shows we got it in us, we can pop the higher teams. I feel like we are one of the higher teams. Really boosted the confidence, because we know we've got it in us now."

The Legionnaires (10-7-0-0) have rematch with the Blazers (12-3-0-0) this Friday, this time over at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex.

It'll be more of the same in practice this week for Swift Current, who will be aiming for a complete 60-minute effort.

"When we get a chance, we've got to be physical on them. We've got to play to our identity, and if we do that, we'll give ourselves a chance to win again next Friday," said Evjen.

That game hits the iPlex Friday at 8 p.m.
