The Great Plains College SunDogs men’s volleyball team didn’t need a win at PAC provincials to build momentum for Westerns.

The Prairie Athletic Conference announced Wednesday that SunDogs head coach Jason Loewer has been named men’s coach of the year. Loewer guided the SunDogs to a 10-5 finish in league play, tied for second overall with the Millar Edge, in spite of a number of key injuries that finally caught up to them at provincials.

“It was unexpected, but we had a good season up until provincials,” said Loewer. “We just had too many injuries and I think the other coaches realized that. It was a nice honour. Like I said, I was surprised, but still very happy to get it.”

Loewer wasn’t the only member of the SunDogs to be honoured in Wednesday’s announcement, as Jordan Nordin was named to the men’s all-star team. The six-foot-two power engineering student from Oxbow put together another strong season, a year after being named the provincials MVP as the SunDogs won their first-ever PAC title.

“He’s a great player. One of the best hitters I’ve seen in many years,” said Loewer. “But he’s also a lot smarter this year. He’s hitting a lot more drop shots and tips so he’s come around as a full player, and I think any team in the league would desire to have him.”

The SunDogs men’s and women’s teams will wrap up their season this weekend at the Western Canadian College Open Volleyball Championships. Westerns run Friday and Saturday in Saskatoon.
