The Swift Current Midget AA Indians opened provincial competition in Saskatoon with a 12-2 win over the Northeast Red Sox.

Coach Neil Hogg described them as their toughest competition as they were the top team in the Midget AA league, while Swift Current played in the Midget AAA league during the regular season.

Justin Kehler got the start tonight, but Hogg had him on a limited pitch count and Zac Mackay came on in relief to get the win. Mackay also went 4 for 4 at the plate for Swift Current.

The Midget Indians play the Regina Buffaloes on Friday at 1:30pm and play two more on Saturday.

It's a ten team tournament and they will have to win six games to win it out.

"We're the favourites," Hogg said. "Everybody realizes that. We've just got to live up to the billing... this is a pretty veteran team I've got so I think they can handle the situation OK."

Hogg has some simple keys to victory in the tournament.

"Playing defence all the time," Hogg noted. "Just making routine plays... and as it always comes to, pitchers throwing strikes."

The Midget Indians finished the AAA season in the middle of the pack with an 18-14 record. Hogg was pleased with their season as he felt they could beat any team in that league on any given night.
