indians ranta

A new potential ace takes the mound tonight as the Swift Current Indians open the WMBL season in Weyburn.

Brian Ranta of George Fox University starts his first season with the Indians with the ball in his hand for the season opener.

So what kind of pitcher is he?

"I've always been a junkballer," said Ranta. "This last year I started throwing a little but harder. I rely on my fastball more than I have in the past. I just throw a fastball, curveball and change up. My curve is probably my second best pitch."

Ranta went 8-2 with a 2.40 ERA during the 2011 college season.

He played for the same school as 2011 WMBL Pitcher of the Year Chad Jones.

"Well it's big shoes to fill," said Ranta. "He came up here and I don't think he gave up an earned run. I don't think I'll do that, but looking forward to doing my best. I'll do something similar."

The Indians are on the road tonight and tomorrow.

Their home opener is Sunday against Okotoks.

You can hear that game live on The Eagle 94.1 FM as part of our partial broadcast schedule for the Indians this summer.
