Swift Current's Megan Rumpel reached a personal best as she earned a silver medal in the pentathlon at the Canada West University Track & Field Championships.

"I felt really good,” Rumpel told Home Hardware's Overtime on The Eagle 94.1 FM Monday night. “It was a huge personal best for me so I was excited with that. You can't go wrong with a personal best.”

Rumpel made strides in most categories but one really boosted her up.

Overtime February 25th Podcast“I'd say the biggest thing was my 800 metre time,” Rumpel said. “I've never been that strong of an 800 metre runner and going into this one I just knew that if I wanted to put out a big score I was going to have to run fast. I ended up having about an 8 second personal best in the 800 so that got me a lot of points.”

Rumpel used to focus mostly on high jump. She has flourished in the pentathlon since starting in recent years.

“I've never really been the absolute best at any event,” Rumpel said. “I've always been relatively good, above average at most of them. That’s really what the pentathlon is. Hopefully you have one or two events that you really excel and at and you can just be average in the others and stuff put out a good point score.”

She and the rest of her team from the University of Regina head to the CIS nationals in two weeks.
There are two girls favoured to finish near the top, but Rumpel sees the other medal spot as more open.

“There's a pack of us who are around the same” Rumpel noted. “It could go either way. It's just about who is going to be there and who has got it them that day.”

The nationals are being held in Edmonton this year.
