The 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games continues in North Battleford today for Team South West, but one team whose rewarding experience is over is the Men's Curling team from the Swift Current Comp High School.

The Swift Current-based team, made up of Theo Lautsch (Skip), Grady Rogers (Third), Michael Orthner (Second), and Quin Doane (Lead), captured a Bronze medal for Team South West.

"It was a great experience, I'd say the whole team had lots of fun," Lautsch said of the event. "The whole atmosphere - just being there and playing against really good teams."

Team South West went 2-1 in Pool A play to finish first:

Won 9-7 over Team South East
Won 6-3 over Team Parkland Valley
Lost 6-3 to Team Regina

In a playoff crossover game with Pool B's second-place Team Saskatoon, the Lautsch rink dropped the semi final 6-4 to drop to the third-place game.

There, the Swift Current team got redemption over Team Regina with a 7-3 victory to take home some hardware.

"We'd like to thank our coach Mr. Ron Bailey for his leadership, and all the members at CurlSask and the volunteers that gave up their week to give us this kind of experience," Lautsch added.

The SCCHS team adds to their hardware this season with the Bronze, after having won SWAC Districts and Sectionals already this season.

"It just takes a lot of discipline, throwing a lot of rocks," Lautsch said, recognizing that the team's effort in practice are paying off. "A coach we had, he always wanted us to throw around 100 rocks per day - that's what he said it would take to get better."

SHSAA Curling Regionals is up next for the Swift Current curlers, as they're in Moose Jaw March 2-3 looking to advance to Provincials.

However, still living in the moment after capturing Bronze, Lautsch says it certainly gets the motivation rolling and fuels the dream of playing on the world stage.

"Being an athlete, something that I'm looking forward to is one day maybe going to the Olympics," he said, noting the Sask Winter Games is a good taste of a small-scale version of the Winter Olympics. "We were not just part of the curling team, we were part of the whole Team South West, and doing things like being at the athletes' village, what the Olympics is like. Things like that - looking for those kinds of things in the future."
