Following suit with the Swift Current WMBL franchise, Swift Current Minor Baseball have now also changed their team name from Indians to 57's.

Beginning in the 2017 Baseball Season all of SCMB's 'AA' and 'AAA' Rep Teams will be called the Swift Current 57's.

Kevin Patenaude, President of Swift Current Minor Baseball says the name change is something they have been working on for a while.

"We made some changes a long time ago with our uniforms and we've been very proactive," he said.

"The name Indians has not been on any of our uniforms for quite some time, we have just had the 'SC' logo. We have been moving towards this for quite some time now."

The overlapping 'SC' logo was also used by the City's WMBL team prior to their re-branding as well.

Patenaude did add that he felt, keeping up with the college-level team was important for SCMB.

"We have worked so well together with the "Big Team" over the years with guys like Joe Carnahan really taking our kids under his wing and running programs and clinics, while being there to help," he said.

"It has been like that with their board as well, so everything we try to do together. It was something that we felt was going to be good to do."

Swift Current 57's President Mike Mutlow had very similar feelings to the SCMB President when it came to working together.

"We are honoured to have minor ball follow in our footsteps again," he said.

"The tradition of having the younger teams adopt the same name began in the mid-80’s with local baseball and the Indian’s name, then this past fall with the Broncos and minor hockey. We are glad for the solidarity and we look forward to continuing to work closely with minor baseball."

Along with the new name, the organization will also adopt the new logo and colour schemes in collaboration with the WMBL team.

Patenaude is confident the minor ball players suiting up in the new uniforms will be thrilled about them.

"It's all about the kids and the future," he said.

"They are going to be so excited to put these things on and they are going to look great."

There are no two ways about it, the 2017 season will have a different look and a different feel for SCMB.

However, Patenaude sees the changes as positive.

"We just think that we need to be sensitive and respectful to everybody out there," he said.

"We live in a different world right now, and we need to show our youth some leadership, which was the biggest part of the name change. We just felt it was something we needed to do."
