Alex Thacker is one of the newest members of the Swift Current Broncos organization.

Swift Current selected the centre with their first of two 6th round picks in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.

"It is a good organization that had a fairly young team last year and still made a good run in the playoffs," Thacker said about the Broncos.

"It's a good team with good coaching."

The St. Albert, Alberta native spent his past two seasons playing in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League with the Fort Saskatchewan Bantam 'AAA' Rangers.

In both of his seasons with the Rangers, Thacker was viewed as a leader on the team and was named the team captain for 2016-17.

He feels that those leadership skills may have been what caught the eye of Broncos Director of Hockey Operations Jamie Porter and his scouting staff when they decided to select him 117th overall.

"Probably that I have been the leader for two years now on my team, as a first-year and a second-year," he said.

"I can put up some points also and don't usually get scored on that much."

The 15-year old had no problems putting up points this past season, helping to guide Fort Saskatchewan to an Alberta provincial title and Western Canada bronze medal.

In 36 regular season games, Thacker put up 23 goals and 34 assists, before adding another 3 goals and 9 assists in their 12 game playoff run.

At Western's in Warman, he continued to produce the offence.

In Fort Saskatchewan's 4 round robin games, the 5'7", 148lbs forward registered 2 goals and 3 assists, and then led the way in the 6-3 bronze medal victory over the Winnipeg Monarchs with 1 goal and 3 assists.

"I just always try to produce for my team," Thacker said.

"I always went to step-up for my team and never let them down."

Even with his strong point production, Thacker views himself as more than just an offensive threat.

"I feel like I am a good 200-foot player," he said.

"I have good vision of the ice and always know where my teammates are."

Despite the positives that can be found in his game, the Fort Saskatchewan captain understands there is a big jump still to be made in order to reach the WHL.

For himself, there are a couple of specific things he feels need further development.

"My first step explosiveness for my skating," he said.

"Also, the hardness of my shot could get better."

Regardless of where Thacker winds up playing when the 2017/18 hockey season rolls around he will be ready to work.

For now though, he is just happy to have been picked in the draft so he can prepare for the next step in his career.

"I was quite surprised actually," he said.

"It was like one second I wasn't on the screen and the next second I was drafted. I was just really surprised, happy and relieved that I got drafted."
