Swift Current Broncos' forward Tyler Steenbergen begins his quest to make Team Canada today at the World Junior Selection Camp in St. Catherine's, Ontario, after learning of his opportunity last Wednesday.

"I was overwhelmed with excitement. Finding out the news was pretty surreal," Steenbergen said. "Growing up watching the World Juniors every year... it's a pretty awesome moment."

The Sylvan Lake, Alberta native is joined in camp by Shaunavon and Kelowna Rockets' forward Kole Lind, who are both among 33 players at the camp with aspirations of representing their country.

"I'll be a little nervous going there, but the first couple skates I'll be able to get the nerves out and hopefully play my own game," Steenbergen said. "Obviously they're going to want to see me score and that's what I'm going to want to do too. I'm going to want to go there and just prove to them that I deserve to be there and that I deserve to be on the team."

Despite leading both the WHL and entire CHL with 35 goals, the Broncos' sniper feels he has more strengths than only goal-scoring to put on display.

"I think I can be versatile in any way. I can score, kill penalties, and play third or a fourth-line role," he said. "I've done that here in Swift in my early years. So I know what to expect if I am on those bottom lines. If I do make the team, our ultimate goal is to win gold, and I'm going to help the team out in any way possible."

At the end of the day, the 5-foot-10 forward's future with Team Canada is in his own hands.

"At the end of the day, it's going to be up to me," Steenbergen said, noting his future with Team Canada's World Junior Team is in his own hands. "I'm going to be the one that has to play well and make the team."

If Steenbergen does, in fact, make Team Canada, the 2017 NHL draft pick (round 5 - pick 128 by Arizona) admitted being away from the Broncos for approximately a month will be a different feeling. However, he adds the team is in good hands.

"It's going to be weird but every day I'll probably be checking in on them and how they're doing, and the scores. We've got a good enough team that we can win any given night so if I am gone, that's what I'll be expecting to see from the guys."

One of those games is on the radar tonight, as the Broncos host the Prince Albert Raiders for the second-straight Tuesday at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex.
