The South Asian Community of Swift Current celebrated Diwali last night at the First United Church.

Diwali is a Festival of Lights that's celebration throughout India.

President of the Southwest Multicultural Association Bula Ghosh explains the celebration of Diwali can vary in different regions of India.

"As you know India is also a very multicultural country. In certain parts of India, it's the New Year that they are celebrating. In certain parts, it's the goddess of wealth, where businesses start their business year and get all of their accounts of the past year settled. Where I come from we celebrate the goddess of strength, and as we say it's the time of defeating of the evil and the good takes over," Ghosh said Sunday evening.

She also shared why events like this are important to people.

"For the last six or seven years, we've taken this occasion for Diwali, the festival of lights to bring people together. Often people are working in isolations in their workplaces or whom they share their apartments and they don't meet the larger community. This is an opportunity to meet the larger community and make friends. You know what keeps us in our community is that connect, so it's an opportunity to meet new people," she told SwiftCurrentOnline.

The event featured a dinner followed by some Bollywood dancing, traditional Indian style, and a Garba Dance. Garba is a famous folk dance of Gujrat, India, that is danced by men, women, and children during this festival season.
