Saskatchewan residents are reminded that pruning Elm trees is once again permitted, effective September 1st.

Each year, elm tree pruning is prohibited from April 1st to August 31st in order to reduce the risk of Dutch Elm disease.  The beetles that spread the disease are most active during this period, and they are attracted to fresh cuts from pruning branches.

Removing dead and dying wood also makes trees less attractive to the Elm bark beetle.
