A Melville man passed through Swift Current on Friday as part of his journey to raise money for cancer.

Jordan Stewart is an engineer for C.N. Rail in Melville who decided that he wanted to make a difference in any way that he could, so he picked up a bike and went on his way.

Starting out in Banff, Alta., Stewart is riding his bike all the way back to his hometown of Melville.

Inspired by Terry Fox and his grandfather that he lost to cancer, Stewart embarked on the journey on September 2 and will arrive in Melville on Monday.

Stewart said that he is a runner at heart, but he wanted to challenge himself to do something that he was less comfortable with for the 1,130-kilometre journey because he wanted to struggle like Terry Fox did during his journey for cancer research.

"I'm a runner, I like to run, and I'm a bigger stronger guy, so that stuff kind of comes easy to me, but biking really doesn't, so I definitely wanted to feel a little bit of the struggle and I definitely have, with the wind and all of the challenges I've had to face, but it's been nothing compared to what Terry had to endure obviously."

Stewart's goal is to raise $10,000 for Cancer research, and he is nearly halfway there, with donations coming in at around $4,800.

Stewart said that Terry Fox's story outlined how important funding is for cancer research.

"One of the main reasons he ran was because the type of cancer that he got, if he would have got it a couple of years prior he would have been dead instantly, and a couple of years later thanks to research he was able to live and he realized the benefit of cancer research," Stewart said. "I didn't know how much I would raise, if it was $1,000 or $5,000 or $20,000, any little bit makes a difference, even if it adds a day onto someone's life."

Yesterday Stewart stopped to participate in the Queen City Marathon in Regina to raise awareness for his journey.
