Saskatchewan has a new Lieutenant Governor.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced this afternoon that Vaughn Schofield will take over the position for the retiring Gordon Barnhart.

Premier Brad Wall was at the House of Commons for the announcement, and congratulated Schofield in a statement, saying "she has contributed to the well-being of the province through her work in business, the arts, education, broadcasting, corporate governance, crime prevention and community involvement."

Gordon Barnhart has been the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan since 2006. Under the constitution, Lieutenant Governors are appointed by the Federal Government for a minumum of five years with no fixed term.

A date for the installation of the new Lieutenant Governor is expected to be announced shortly.

Statement from the Prime Minister's Office on the Announcement of the new Lieutenant Governor:
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the appointment of Mrs. Vaughn Solomon Schofield as Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. 

“Mrs. Schofield is a remarkable Canadian who will bring to the position of Lieutenant Governor significant experience in business, the arts, education and broadcasting,” said the Prime Minister. “Time and time again she has shown an unwavering dedication to the community, province and country, in particular through her service to the Canadian Armed Forces."

Mrs. Schofield has had a successful career in business and has been involved in a number of community organizations in Saskatchewan including the Canadian Forces Liaison Council, St. John Ambulance, the Hospitals of Regina Foundation, the Saskatchewan Roughriders and many others. Mrs. Schofield is also an Honourary Lieutenant-Colonel for the 38 Service Battalion.

Lieutenant Governors are appointed by His Excellency the Governor General on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.  They serve five-year terms, during which they act as their provinces’ vice-regal representatives.

Prime Minister Harper also took the opportunity to thank his Honour the Honourable Dr. Gordon L. Barnhart for his dedicated service as Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, which began in August 2006.
