Do take care if planning to hit the road today.

Approximately 5 cm of snow is expected to fall across our portion of the province throughout the day, and along with blowing wind could reduce visibility along our local highways. A daytime high of 1 degree could create some icy conditions as well.

According to Environment Canada, there is a chance we could see snowfall on and off for the remainder of the week.

While we experience a blast of winter weather this afternoon, the crews over at the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure will likely be kept fairly busy again this winter. The Ministry's Doug Wakabayashi tells us that crews respond based on a number of criteria.

"Highest priority is given to routes with daily traffic counts of 1500 vehicles a day or greater, so that includes highways like Highway 1, snow is plowed from the driving lanes within six hours of the end of the storm, and ice is treated or assessed for treatment as soon as practical and within six hours of the end of the storm."

Wakabayashi also reminds us to check out the Highway Hotline if we plan on travelling this winter... "Road conditions on the Highway Hotline during the winter months are updated a minimum of three times and as needed as well, but if we are aware of changing conditions either from reports from the public or RCMP, we'll factor those in."
