In September 2020 the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Association began accepting cannabis retail store permit applications for all communities.

In communities with over 2,500 people, stores may be stand alone or be integrated with another business.

At the most recent Shaunavon Town Council meeting, Council approved two stand-alone cannabis outlets in the community.

Mayor Kyle Bennett said that the decision was not taken lightly. Council deliberated and were provided with opinions from residents both for, and against, the stores, as well as comments from various community groups including the Chamber of Commerce, RCMP, Economic Development, and Rock Solid Refuge.

Mayor Bennett said, "I would just like to say that these new business ventures will contribute to the town's vision of being an attractive, growing and welcoming community with a diverse and vibrant business sector, assortment of amenities, services and opportunities, while acting as a regional hub for both business and tourism."

Both cannabis retail outlets will be located a minimum of one block from all schools and playgrounds.
