Dorie's House is set to close on October 4 - eight months and change after opening - and Saskatchewan Premier and Swift Current MLA Brad Wall took to Facebook to respond on Friday.

He said Southwest YES - the group that runs the youth shelter in Swift Current - "was informed before they started construction that if they proceeded, they needed to do so knowing there was no guarantee, nor existing budget room, for their request for operating funds. That was made clear. Through Social Services, Saskatchewan does fund two youth homes in Swift Current with Fresh Start Program and Angel House, both of which have been operating before Dorie's House."

Wall said at the time that of eight spaces between Fresh Start Program and Angel House, five were currently open.

Dorie's House has had 25 different people come through their doors for a total of over 500 overnight stays.

A statement issued by Social Services Minister Paul Merriman said, "Dorie's House was built even though organizers were told that there was no budget for operating funds. The Ministry of Social Services already funds two licensed youth and young adult group homes in Swift Current and as of today, three of eight available spots are in use. In addition, the government also provides funding to the Swift Current Community Youth Initiative which offers community programming for youth."

In Wall's Facebook post he said, "our community partners provide parenting education, intensive in-home supports for families at risk, and other prevention supports to keep families together. There's also weekday programming including counselling and mentoring, as well as free tutoring on Tuesday, a free hot meal on Wednesday, and free beginner and advanced guitar lessons on Thursday.

"We're committed to providing help to children, youth, and families in need in Swift Current and across the province."
