It looks like the winter season could be beginning earlier than usual this year.

Environment Canada is predicting a couple different weather disturbances carrying snow to hit the southwest during the next few days.

John Paul Cragg, warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada said it's too early to tell if the winter is here for good, but the next few weeks the southwest will get hit with winter-like conditions.

"It looks like we're diving into winter," he said. "We have a couple systems that will be affecting southwestern Saskatchewan over the next couple of days."

Cragg noted the patterns of the atmosphere changed quickly this year bring cold air into the province leading to an abbreviated fall season.

"Because of this our temperatures are dropping off more and more," he said. "That pattern doesn't look like it will change for the next couple of weeks."

Today the forecast is calling for snow amounts up to 2 centimetres - a trend that will continue into the weekend.

"It might let up a little bit on Thursday," Cragg said. "By Thursday night through into Friday morning, another system looks like it could bring another 2-4 centimetres of snow to the southwest corner of the province. Then potentially again on Saturday another system looks like it could bring some snow possible ranging from 5-10 centimetres."

Cragg said next week the snow might die down but the cold weather looks to intensify with overnight lows dropping to roughly minus 20.
