The Swift Current Broncos (2-7-2-1) put on a strong 60-minute effort Wednesday night, but the Saskatoon Blades (9-2-1-0) tied the game with their goaltender pulled and completed the comeback with a shootout victory at Sasktel Centre.

Josh Davies opened the scoring 3:23 into the game, intercepting a D-to-D pass by the Blades at the Broncos blue line and coming in on a breakaway, beating Nolan Maier through the five-hole for his fourth of the season.

The Blades tied the game three minutes later as Josh Paulhus redirected a pass from the left circle off the shoulder of Poulter and in. Davies hit the goal post off a faceoff win in the Blades zone and also backchecked hard to break up a 2-on-1 rush for the Blades in the opening frame.

Davies was called for kneeing with just under six minutes to play in the period and the Blades power play capitalized when Egor Sidorov slid home a loose puck in the crease to give the Blades a 2-1 lead after one period.

Isaac Poulter stopped Sidorov on a penalty shot in the second period, staying right with the Belarusian forward and making a right pad save to keep the game 2-1 at the 9:22 mark of the middle frame.

Cole Nagy would tie the game for Swift Current later in the period. Gaining the Blades blue line on left wing, Nagy took a pass from Sam McGinley and fired a shot from the left faceoff dot, beating Maier over the glove to tie the game.

Less than a minute later the Broncos went to the power play, and Mathew Ward slid the puck across the crease to Nagy who tapped in his second goal in 1:21 to give the Broncos a 3-2 lead heading into the third period. The goal ended a streak of 27 consecutive penalties killed off by Saskatoon.

The score remained 3-2 until the final minutes of the game as the Broncos killed off a late power play by the Blades, but Saskatoon would ultimately tie it.

With Maier on the bench for the extra attacker, Aidan de la Gorgendiere let a wrist shot go from the blue line that was tipped in by Brandon Lisowsky with 1:37 to play. There was a lengthy delay as the tip appeared to be from above the crossbar, but the officials eventually ruled that it was a good goal.

The Broncos had a power play for the final 58 seconds of overtime but couldn’t take advantage as both teams went to a shootout for the first time this season.

After the first four shooters were stopped, Rylan Gould, Kyle Crnkovic, Mathew Ward and Tristen Robins, Brendan Lee scored for the Blades in round three. Nagy had to score to keep the game alive but was stopped by the glove of Maier as the Blades completed their comeback.

The Broncos now return to the Innovation Credit Union iPlex to begin a six-game homestand which starts Friday with the Medicine Hat Tigers in town. It’s Junior Bronco night as Swift Current will be wearing specially-designed jerseys which will be auctioned off during the game in the lobby.
