Leafs fall to Panthers, will face Bruins in playoffs

Auston Matthews' quest for a rare 70-goal season will have to wait until Toronto's very last game of the year after the Maple Leafs dropped a 7-5 decision to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday. Matthews was left off the scoresheet and sits at 69 goals heading into the Leafs' regular season finale in Tampa Bay tonight.

Meanwhile, the Panthers clinched the Atlantic Division with the victory and will face the cross-state rival Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. Toronto will face the Boston Bruins, who eliminated the Leafs in their last two first-round matchups in 2018 and 2019. The Bruins lost 3-1 to Ottawa on Tuesday night.

Elsewhere, the Detroit Red Wings edged the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 in the shootout, but it was all for naught as the Washington Capitals wrapped up the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with a 2-1 win over Philadelphia that eliminated the Flyers, Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins from playoff contention all at once. The Caps will face the Presidents' Trophy winning New York Rangers in the first round and the Carolina Hurricanes will take on the New York Islanders in the last Eastern Conference playoff matchup.

Out west, the Vancouver Canucks claimed their first Pacific Division title since 2013 with a 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames, and the Winnipeg Jets, who will face the Colorado Avalanche in round one, picked up a 4-3 win over the Seattle Kraken. Tonight, the Coyotes will host the Edmonton Oilers in what will likely be their final game in Arizona with the team poised to move to Salt Lake City, Utah next season.
