Checkstops will be out this weekend as local RCMP crack down on impared drivers (File Photo)

While we ring in 2012, local police will be keeping a close eye on our streets.

Staff Sgt. Al Macdonnell with the Swift Current City RCMP detachment says they will watching for impared drivers, much like they have throughout the holiday season.

"We'll be focusing our attention certainly on New Years Eve. You'll probably notice a checkstop or two out and about, and again our focus will be on impared drivers," Macdonnell says.

Anyone planning to take part in some holiday cheer is encouraged to plan ahead by either making sure you have a designated driver or have another plan in place to get home sober.

Over the Christmas holiday, only a single charge of impared driving was issued. An encouraging sign for our police force.
