Law enforcement was focused on intersection safety in January as part of the first SGI Traffic Safety Spotlight of 2021.

SGI asked drivers to spend some time thinking about the different types of intersections and the rules that apply. Unfortunately, some drivers in Saskatchewan weren't interested in following the rules and 992 intersection tickets were issued in January.

Tyler McMurchy is the Manager of Media Relations with SGI. He said, "Probably should serve as a good reminder that when you come to that red light, or when you come to that stop sign, you need to come to that full and complete stop. You're not allowed to do a U-turn in an intersection controlled by a traffic light. You want to make sure that you're following the rules when it comes to four way stops. And, of course, always look out for your fellow road-users including other motorists and pedestrians."

He adds that nearly half of all collisions in Saskatchewan happen in intersections, and a ticket for failing to properly stop for a red light, and doing a u-turn in an intersection controlled by traffic lights will cost you $230.

In January SGI also focused on safety around railroads.

It's important to be alert and be prepared to stop when approaching railway crossings.

Despite the speed and power of trains, 26 drivers were ticketed for disobeying stop signals at railway crossings in January.
